The University of Strathclyde is a leading international technological university which prides itself on partnerships with public and private sectors. Established in 1796 as a place of ‘useful learning,’ the University remains committed to research, teaching and being of benefit to society. We reach outside the University to make society better educated, prosperous, healthy, fair and secure, through excellence in research, education, knowledge exchange and creative engagement with partner organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
We are a university that makes a positive difference to the lives of students, society and the world. Our strategic aim is to develop students who are engaged, enterprising, enquiring, and ethically, globally and culturally aware; work-ready graduates with impact who engage with societal and global challenges.
Strathclyde is a modern university with nearly 20,000 students and more than 3,000 staff. Our heritage of useful learning and high quality student experience is based on our staff’s commitment and enthusiasm. We work together to deliver the university’s mission and vision, and strive to create a culture of collaboration and integration. We are also committed to widening access to education, so that ability to study, rather than economic or social circumstances, determines the success of an application.
Strathclyde has more than 14,000 undergraduates from more than 100 nations, with 80% living on or close to campus in the heart of Glasgow. Strathclyde offers a flexible, innovative learning environment with a first-class student experience. The QAA review awarded us the highest possible ratings for teaching quality. Employers value our graduates not only for their academic achievements but also their all-round experience. As a student at Strathclyde, you will have access to: interactive classrooms, digital design facilities and labs, top-flight engineering simulators, multi-million pound chemical engineering facilities, laser and photonics facilities, campus-wide wireless internet access and numerous computer labs. Exchange opportunities are available worldwide, for which students receive full academic credit without extended study.
The undergraduate experience is also supported by first-class IT services including: more than 1,500 campus PCs in more than 30 labs; a dedicated 24/7 IT helpdesk; access to MyPlace, a virtual e-learning environment and a mobile app for information on the go.
Approximately 45,000 students at the university study part-time in the evenings, at weekends and through distance learning. Around 4,000 of our students are mature students and nearly 10% are overseas students from more than 100 countries.
In the Research Excellence Framework 2014, Strathclyde was positioned in the top 20 for research intensity; this places us in the top five biggest upward movers among ‘research intensive’ institutions. We were ranked best in the UK for Physics, Strathclyde Business School featured in the top 10 in the UK and number one in Scotland, and seven of our Engineering departments were ranked in the UK top 10.
We offer a wide range of taught programmes (Master, MSc, MLitt, MEd, MArch, LLM, PGDE, PgDip, PgCert) and research degrees (MRes, MPhil, PhD) across all subject areas. Our Centres for Doctoral Training offer four-year programmes which integrate world-class research teams with pioneering external partnerships in an interdisciplinary environment. Our Technology and Innovation Centre is a hub of research activity where we work with business and industry to find solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges.
